Have You Set Up Your Budget Yet?

If your answer to this question is no, don’t panic! I actually teach that you need your goals figured out BEFORE your budget.

In my online course 30 Day Family Finance Rescue I teach what I call Goal Based Budgeting. The idea that every line in your budget should in some way be getting you closer to achieving your goals.

I know, it’s a total flip from how we have all been taught traditionally about finances. But what I have seen work so successfully for our family and hundreds of other Pearls, is that when you set your budget based off your goals you have a clear direction on what you want your money to do. Other than just paying the bills.

Doing it this way also helps you and your family stay extremely motivated to stick with the budget because you know what your working towards.

3 Steps to Creating a Vision Board for Your Budget

Dream Big and Brainstorm

Any piece of paper will do. Even the free notes app in your phone. Either way, what you’ll do is start thinking about how you want your life to look in 1, 5, and 10 years from now.

Think about your family, think about your health. What type of lifestyle do you want to be living? What sorts of freedom do you dream about when it comes to your schedule?

The most important part is to not hold back! If you think it sounds silly, kick that negative thought out of your head and write down the goal! You can’t go to big on this one!

Gather Supplies

It’s time to make a visual of everything (or most) of what you just wrote down. You’ll want to be sure and include the goals that are most valuable to you. I find it easiest to just do a quick internet search, copy and paste into a Google doc, and then print.

You don’t need to be fancy. You could tape these pictures straight onto your bathroom mirror. Do what you have the supplies for today and if you want to upgrade later you can.

I found this simple cork board at target for about $10, uploaded my images to be printed at Costco, and got these cute pins off Amazon. A total of about $15 and I have a wall of major inspiration sitting in front of me as I work every day.

Put it Somewhere You See All the Time

I mentioned putting the pictures on your bathroom mirror because you most likely go in the at least a couple times a day. You can put your vision board anywhere you think you will see it on a regular basis.

This is why I’m not a huge fan of digital vision boards, you don’t see them often enough. Unless you make it the wallpaper of your phone or computer, that would probably work.

When you feel the budget burnout, take a minute and look over your vision board to be reminded over and over again of where your hard work is getting you!

Want to Know How to Connect Your Goals to Your Budget?

You now have some seriously dream worthy goals up on display. But we all know that a goal without a plan is just a wish. Put a financial action plan behind it and those goals become your reality!

When our family decided to stop wishing and actually start taking action to pay off over $20,000 in debt or pay cash for our couples vacation to Costa Rica, we used what I now call the Better Life Budgeting System. This is a real life step-by-step process that is 100% customizable for your family too!

It’s how we broke down our goals into actionable financial steps and worked backwards to figure out what was Step 1 so we could get started and know we were making progress where WE wanted to go.

If you want to learn how to start using the Better Life Budgeting System TODAY, I have a free online training that you can signup for right now by clicking here.
