Have an End Project in Mind
Before you get started on creating your next DIY furniture piece, you need to figure out what you want to end up with or what type of furniture you want to transform. Do you want a new dresser? Are you in need of a new TV stand? You need to figure out what your desired end result is so you know what type of furniture to start out with.

Find a solid piece of furniture
Ikea just wont hack it for these kinds of projects. For a good DIY furniture project you have to find a solid piece of wood furniture. An almost fail proof way to make sure it is solid wood is to look at the bottom of the furniture. If it is not solid wood, you will see lines of where the laminate overlays the fake wood.

Laminate furniture is not ideal for refinishing because they can peal up easily and even start to bubble if it gets too much use. Those are things that can’t easily be fixed.

Look for pretty lines
The lines of a piece of furniture are something you can’t change. Not easily and not frugally. So when looking for your next DIY furniture project, make sure to pay attention to the lines.

Do you want something more modern that has more ridged and straight lines? Or do you want something more country / vintage that has a more curvy look? Inlays are another line to look for. Old vintage pieces have a lot more detail, which is really hard to find in newer pieces of furniture. If you find something curvy and has pretty carved details and it is at good price, I would snatch that up if I were you!

Get the right price
Have a set budget in mind of what you want to spend on your piece of furniture. Keep in mind the cost of supplies, sandpaper, hardware, paint etc.

My favorite place to look for used furniture is on Craigslist. There really isn’t anywhere else that you can find such amazing deals. Almost every price is negotiable! The deals you will find will most likely be better than any prices you might find at a thrift store or at a swap meet. Don’t even think about going to a antique store! Those prices are just going to make you laugh!

The Hardware Doesn’t Matter
Don’t put too much weight of your decision on the hardware. Nobs and handles can easily and inexpensively be replaced.
