With baby number three having just arrived in our family, my mind has turned to prepping. Baby prepping. I am trying to think about everything and anything I can do to save time and money for when the little guy comes! That way all my thoughts and attention can be on my family!
Having a newborn join your family is one of the very most exciting times in life! It almost feels like the world stops for those first few days and weeks and all you have to do is love and care for your precious little one.
Then reality hits. The world doesn’t actually stop. Your bills still need to be paid. Your other kid or kids, your hubby, and yourself still need to be fed. Your house still needs to function somewhat. It is a lot to juggle all at the same time!
But even with all the things that are still on the never ending to-do list you still want and need that special time to enjoy while your baby is still a baby! I have found that the very best way handle this balancing act is to prepare as much as possible.
Here are a few tips on how to save time and money when your are having a baby.
I cannot fully express my appreciation for freezer meals! Once you have all the prep work out of the way (before baby comes) you just stick these glorious meals into the freezer and that is about the last time you have to think about dinner for a while.
Think about how much time each day you spend on dinner. Imagine, not having to put any thought or effort into dinner! All you will have to do is decide which meal sounds good for the day then pop it into the oven, on the grill, or in your crockpot.
Not only is having a freezer stocked with meals going to save you a bunch of time but it is going to save you money! When the time comes for dinner and you are just too exhausted to even think about going into the kitchen, you know your thoughts are going to turn to take out! Those last minute drive-thru runs will add up and eat up your grocery budget in a hurry!
Busy bags for older children
When my 4 year old decided she was done taking naps I panicked! How in the world was I going to get anything done without my 2-3 hour break of peace and quiet? With no one asking me questions every ten minutes. The solution was quiet boxes!
These quiet boxes or busy bags will be perfect for when your baby comes! A lot of a new mom’s time in the first few weeks with a newborn is spent feeding baby. These special moments take up a bunch of time and attention. The perfect opportunity for the “big kids” to get into trouble! The prepped mom is ready for distraction!
There is no need to buy anything expensive. Having a bag full of special toys, books, puzzles, and other kid friendly entertainment will save you! Make sure that the bags only come out during these “special” times. Your new busy bags will keep your other kiddos distracted and keep you sane. At least for a good 20 minutes…
Make a baby budget
I’m not talking about a budget to cover the diapers, or formula, or wipes. Being the frugal fabulous mom that you are have already taken care of that! Right? I am talking about a more fun budget! When talking about living frugal and fabulous I often times mention budgeting for fun. Bringing home a newborn is a perfect example.
You and your family are going to want to get out of the house at some point. Make sure there is room in your budget for the extra gas or money for a small trip out to get ice cream. Something small will help keep you and your family’s sanity!
What do you think?
Trying to find your families new normal can be a challenge but if you make sure to budget for this busy time you will have a lot more freedom to enjoy the moments that go by way to fast!
