How to Afford Your Goals
Why Not You?
It breaks my heart any time I hear someone say that they will never have a life like that. If that’s the life you want, then why not? What’s stopping you? Why can’t that be you?
Maybe you won’t have exactly that life, but you don’t want someone else’s life. You want the best life for yourself. Maybe that’s an alternative version of “that life”, but you can live your best life for sure!
You are not stuck! You can make change happen. You are capable of doing hard things. You can change your situation. It is up to you.
Next time you catch yourself thinking “I won’t ever have that life.” Stop! Change your thoughts to “why not me?” Evaluate and determine what needs to change in order for you to live the best life you can imagine for your family.
Get Your Finances Under Control
The first step to moving towards your ultimate life is making sure that your finances are under control.
Find ways to increase your income in order to put aside a $1,000 – $2,000 emergency fund. Make it your highest priority to live a debt free life. And don’t you forget to put in place a plan for retirement. You can do this!
These are the basics but I promise you, once you get these foundational steps in place you will develop a higher level of thinking where it becomes second nature for you to discover new routes on the path to your dream worthy life for your family.
Write Out Your Goals & Priorities
What does it look like when you imagine an incredible life for your family? This doesn’t mean automatically that you dream of a 10,000 square foot house on the beach of an exotic island. Or maybe it does.
But what I want you to understand is that an amazing life can be very realistic. For me I imagine a small but beautifully renovated home in this cute little town where we currently live. I picture that sweet little house being completely paid off. I dream about regular family vacations and an annual couples retreat just for hubby and I.
Nothing too extravagant, but living a self reliant life that allows us to retire at a decent age and still live very comfortably, is my dream!
What does your dream life look like? What are some milestones that you will cross along the way? Write them all down and it’s important to prioritize so you know where to start.
Make an Action Plan
What is priority number one? What needs to happen in order for you to reach that goal? Write out a step by step action plan to get you there.
What will your career path look like? Do you need to learn a new skill? Do you have any habits that you need to break? What finances do you need to fund your goal? How are you going to make that happen?
Let’s say your goal is to start going on a family trip once a year. What is a general budget you want to set for the trip? Does your current job allow for you to take the time off? If not, what needs to be done in order to make that possible? How are you going to incorporate saving for the trip as part of your regular and ongoing budget? Is there other parts of your spending that you are willing to give up in order to fund you current prioritized goal?
Does that give you an idea how to break down the thinking process in order to create an action plan for achieving your goals?
Start by focusing on your top one or two priorities. Don’t worry about your other dreams at the moment. The cool thing is that somehow when you focus your efforts on your top priority your other dreams seem to fall into place on their own as you lead the way.
Don’t wait to start implementing what you just learned! You are feeling pumped and ready to start working towards an amazing life for your family. Act on that momentum!
Get out a piece of paper right now and start brainstorming your goals! If you are married, forward this blog post to your hubby and you both get to work ASAP! Then figure out what the action steps are needed to achieve the life you dream of!
It is not out of reach! You just have to work for it! You can do hard things! Remember, why not you?
