Have you ever been to Ikea before? I had never stepped foot in one of their stores until I was in college. It didn’t take more than 60 seconds to realize this would soon be one of my new favorite stores!
Don’t have one nearby? The good news is you can buy pretty much anything in their stores online.
They have super cute home décor items for really great prices. Some of my favorite things there are items that are very basic and need a little DIY to make them completely unique. Just like these spice racks.
They are only $4 each to buy, they come in unfinished wood, and they only take about 3 minutes to put together. Doesn’t this piece just scream out DIY? This is definitely one of those Ikea ideas that takes little time and money to make it into something frugal fabulous!
Now don’t think strictly along the lines of a spice rack. That might be what the store intended the use to be but really it’s just a cute shelf. That is what I will be using mine for.
DIY Ikea Ideas – Repurposed Spice Rack
1. Assemble your shelf. There are easy picture instructions in the product that show you quickly how to get it all put together.
2. Now paint. I chose to try out a two tone look on this piece. I had never done this before but it turned out great.
All this means is I painted one layer of an off white. Let that dry completely. Then did a second layer with an avocado green spray paint. (Green is the color of my kitchen)
3. Once the paint was dry, I used a 200 grit sandpaper to rough up the edges. This gives it a more shabby chic look that I love. This technique also makes it easy to cover up any imperfections in your paintings!
4. Follow the products instructions on how to hang it up.
Cheap and easy! The perfect frugal fabulous craft idea in my book!
I actually made a third that is not pictured and I am using that shelf to hold my towels and potholders. Great way to organize!
I had some pretty flowers in my house this weekend so I used the shelf to display them. My plan in the future is to find some small cute pots, plant some herbs in them, and then show them off on this awesome Ikea repurposed spice rack!
